As some of you may have heard, Tent City - a stretch of tents under I-345 that is home to over 400 houseless individuals in Dallas - is being shut down by the city of Dallas. Because of Tent City's proximity to Deep Ellum, the following official statement from the Deep Ellum Foundation is good for all of us to read and remember: The city is going through phases of closing out and cleaning up Tent City under I-345 with the goal of it being completely shut down by May 4, 2016. In response to this major change in our area, the Deep Ellum Foundation is planning on increasing our Expanded Neighborhood Patrol (ENP) Officer hours to include a day and/or night shift every day throughout the month of May. This is all precautionary and only planned for the month of May. We've talked to several experts on this issue including OurCalling, Crisis Intervention, and our Neighborhood Patrol unit, who all agree that we shouldn't see a major influx in the area, as most of Deep Ellum is all private property. However, we're prepared to handle come what may with our extra officer presence. Along with the officers, we think that the OurCalling app and directory provide the most comprehensive and useful resources for the homeless. The more familiar you and your staff are with this tool the better. I'd highly encourage that you have your whole staff download the app if possible. We also have several copies of the directory if you need any more. If you or someone you know is experiencing any issues with the homeless or panhandlers please call 9-1-1 first, then please let Amanda know so she can contact our designated police officer and make sure our specific incidents are on record as well.
